THE AUTOCONSTRUCCÍON SUITES is a body of artworks and actions by artist Abraham Cruzvillegas that draws upon a particular architectural phenomenon in Mexico. Autoconstruccíon translates to "self build," and refers to a kind of construction where homes are built piecemeal with whatever materials are readily available at that moment, resulting in structures that incorporate many surfaces, techniques, and styles.
Cruzvillegas extends this idea through improvisational combinations of sculpture, drawing, video, songwriting, and research. The exhibition catalogue organizes this concrete mix of work and references into a personal creative reference book, supported by several essays. Curated and edited by Clara Kim and published on the occasion of his exhibition at the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis.
